On October 9, 2013, Munathara held its live debate #DD10, on the motion, “Is Tunisia Facing Bankruptcy?” Broadcast on Hannibal TV in Tunisia, the debate featured two young winners of our tenth program cycle, debating alongside the former transitional Minister of Finance Slim Besbes, and renowned economist Mahmoud Ben Romdhane of the Nidaa Tounes movement.
Since the ouster of former dictator Ben Ali in January 2010, Tunisia has faced many challenges – the creation of a new government, building core institutions to ensure the viability of its emerging democracy, and drafting a constitution. However, as the years have sped along, Tunisia seems to be facing economic crisis. Inflation has increased to the highest levels since the 1970’s, more and more youth are unable to find jobs, and national debt continues to climb.
The debate, moderated by Tunisian radio host Rim Saaidia, was structured around three more specific topics: Is economic instability a result of political instability in Tunisia? Has the Tunisian government done enough to make the country attractive for much-needed foreign investment? How is the government stimulating the creation of jobs?
The debate started with an audience vote: 65% for the motion - 35% against the motion
The team against the motion won the debate, the audience voted in the end of the debate: 59% for the motion - 41% against the motion
