Our final event under the Dubai Debates brand was dedicated to the role of women in the Arab Spring, and the challenges they continued to face in the Arab world following the popular revolutions. Yet again, the Dubai Debates was able to attract a top panel of dynamic speakers – leading activists, media personalities and academics from Palestine, Tunisia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates. As part of our fourth debate cycle, we also piloted our community outreach program to broaden opportunities for citizens to engage in the debates. Contributions to #DD4 came from a range of Arab nations, including Egypt, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan and Lebanon.
The live debate discussed several pressing questions about women’s rights, social perceptions and possible policies to advance the status of women in the region, including: Should there be quotas for women in Arab parliaments? Will Arab women as business leaders always be the exception? Is the Western model of “women’s rights” applicable to the Arab world? All videos of the live debate are available with English subtitles.
