Held in Amman, Jordan, Munathara’s seventh live debate tackled the question: Is Arab political unity our destiny? At a time when the positive momentum of the Arab Spring was seen as waning, the initiative stimulated a pan-Arab debate about the long-term vision for the region.

The live event was preceded by Munathara’s largest online debate competition to date – some 130 youth from nine Arab countries submitted their contributions to Musabaqat Munanthara #DD7. Two winners - Ghida Al Quda from Jordan and Yassine Ben Smida from Tunisia - were chosen by public vote to take part in the live panel at Princess Sumaya University in Amman.

They were joined by the renowned Palestinian commentator Abdel Bari Atwan, then editor-in-chief of Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper, and Bashar Haydar, a Lebanese philosophy professor at the American University in Beirut. The lively debate, attended by some 320 guests, was moderated by Nisreen Abu Dayyeh and broadcast on Roya TV, Jordan’s leading private television station.

The debate started with an audience vote: 69% for the motion - 20% against the motion

The team against the motion won the debate, the audience voted in the end of the debate: 69% for the motion - 28% against the motion
