Maydan Munathara is an innovative public-deliberation project born from a partnership between the Munathara Initiative and Democracy Reporting International (DRI). Launched in 2022, Maydan takes Munathara’s solution-focused debate model out of studios and into the streets, hosting live podcasts about human rights and social justice in cultural venues across four major regions in Tunisia.
Each live podcast is moderated by two hosts who facilitate a focused discussion among youth participants, expert guests, policymakers, human rights advocates, content creators, and a live audience. Topics have included the right to a fair trial, access to water, the education crisis, and the right to work. Before each recording, Munathara launches a digital contest inviting Tunisians aged 18–30 to submit 90-second videos debating the episode’s theme. A public vote then selects the top contributors to participate in the live discussion. This hybrid format not only amplifies youth voices but also strengthens both institutional and grassroots mechanisms for human rights protection.
By situating these debates in everyday social spaces- cafés, cultural centers, and public squares- Maydan Munathara builds an inclusive public sphere where emerging Tunisian leaders can develop their advocacy skills, raise awareness of universal rights, and inspire real-world action beyond digital platforms and into the heart of their communities.
